Topic sentence

I am trying to write an effective topic sentence to begin my paragraph. My teacher said academic writing uses the passive voice, a lot.

Does this topic sentence of mine below make sense?

In 2008, Jean-Francois Trape et al researched malaria morbidity in the village of Dielmo, Senegal, in order to better understand three hypothesis . The first, ... The second.. The third.
With recourse to three empirical research methods, namely by negative binomial regression, logistic regression and Fisher exact test, it was here where research around the transmission and control of malaria revealed an empirical connection
between the number of cases of malaria and the introduction of insecticide-treated bednets (LLINs). ETC

Thanks.

A topic sentence is the key to, and defines the scope of, a particular paragraph. It can be in the passive voice but it needn't be so. What will your paragraph deal with?
