In recent times, it is true that people increasingly spend a lot of time working, which makes them lack time to close their family and friends. The justifications and consequences will be elaborated on in the subsequent paragraphs.

On the one hand, there are two underlying reasons why people have to work longer hours. First and foremost, nowadays the job market is becoming more competitive due to the fast-paced development of society. Therefore, individuals need to learn various practical skills and experience in order to get work done more productively. If they fail to try to work, they may be out of work and replaced by people who work better. Secondly, living costs are higher than that in former days, which easily makes people have difficulty when they meet financial deprivation. Thus, they devote their time to working to earn a high salary. As a result, they can cover their basic needs and support their family.

On the other hand, the frequency of long working hours causes some negative effects in which their family relationships suffer the most. Spending a great deal of time at the workplace leads to having little or no time for their family members; therefore, the relationships are becoming faint and members easily conflict within the family. In addition, the stresses of work do not be released while the family atmosphere is not good. As a result, when they are under high stress pressure, they might create low productivity even if they spend most of their time working. Another consequence worth noting is long working hours have a negative impact on the health of employees. They lack time to take a break and eat in moderation so they are at risk of suffering from various health issues such as anxiety disorders, fatigue, stomach pain.

In conclusion, people have to extend hours of work because of the competitive job market and the increase in living costs. Besides, this trend also has a serve impact on their family, their health, and their work performance.
