More and more contemporary attention has been placed on the opinion that an increasing number of museums and historical sites has a tendency to attract tourists instead of the local community. There is a variety of reasons behind this view and several solutions should be adopted by governments and individuals to improve the situation.

There are two primary reasons why local museums and historic sites appeal the visitors. First of all, residents do not tend to pay frequent visits to these places as the majority of them have already significant knowledge of their culture. In particular, when the local people are familiar with their indigenous history, they will not come here to search for this kind of information again, as a result, the proportion of native people visiting local museums has a downward trend. The second reason is that the museum and historical sites are likely to gain more profit as the increasing demand of foreign people wants to explore a new culture. To be more specific, when tourists travel to a new place, they have a tendency to explore its vanished culture by going to the local museums or historical sites; therefore, the owner of museums can gain profit by selling tickets or souvenirs.

Fortunately, several measures could be done to mitigate this phenomenon. The first solution is that the state should renew the display of artifacts in museums or historical sites. Particularly, different exhibitions can be displayed and promoted more often, focusing on different themes or aspects of culture to appeal to the locals. The second solution is that government can encourage residents to come to the museums by combining them with educational systems or companies. For example, they can fund annual trips for local children to museums and historical sites

In conclusion, attracting local people to visit museums and historical sites in their area may be a difficult process, however, there are a number of ways that locals could be encouraged to do so.
