Question: Living in big cities is bad for health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay:

Many people have argued that lives in urban areas are definitely detrimental to their health. However, while I can not deny the disadvantages of living in big cities, I totally disagree with this arguement.

On the one hand, it is an undeniable fact that citizens of bustling cities are being exposed to a huge variety of harmful factors, of which the two most striking ones are air pollution and sedentary lifestyle. Firstly, living in cities which have increasingly been highly polluted may result in some serious health problems. For instance, studies show that people living in most polluted cities in the world such as Beijing (China), Hanoi (Vietnam) have seen a higher proportions of being heart cancer than others. Secondly, lives in modern cities are promoting inactive lifestyle, which increases the risks of some developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and heart problems. This is the result of over-reliance on a large number of escalators and elevators appearing in high buildings, shopping malls and overuse of cars.

On the other hand, I believe that these living environments also have many crucial advantages compared to rural areas. One of the most profound benefits is the better healthcare systems, both public and private. In particular, people living in cities are surely beneficial from state-of-the-art facilities of hospitals and medical centers, therefore experiencing better and quicker medical treatments whenever they have illness, specifically in emergencies. Moreover, they have better conditions to access the Internet, which has placed the entire world of health information and knowledge at their fingertips. Obviously, being equiped with more necessary knowledge leads to higher awareness that they have a personal responsibility to protect their own health.

In conclusion, I want to reaffirm my position that although life in urban areas can be harmful in some ways, there are still some considerable benefits in terms of health which influence people to choose to live and work in large cities.
