'...took the wrong end of the stick'

Emma's words were quite ambiguous, so I am not surprised if he took the wrong end of the stick.

Just wondering if I used this idiom correctly and whether 'to take' is the correct verb here.

Thanks

I cannot judge without more context, but the idiom (and what do you think it means?) seems odd here.

In the UK we get the wrong end of the stick.

This idiom seems ok in this context to me - it means to misunderstand something.

Thanks for your replies.

Sorry, I should have included the context as well. I wanted the line to mean that Emma was not being clear on what she meant and the boy misinterpreted her.

Thanks
