took the place of any real intrigue/plot

To some, "The Mummy" was just mindless escapism, a movie whose special efffects took the place of any real intrigue.

Hi,
Is it accurate to interpret "intrigue" in the above as "plot?" Thanks.

One definition of plot, perhaps -- the one that means a "scheme", but not the definition of plot that means the whole series of events of a narrative.
I hear the word plot so often in the second meaning, that I don't quite pick it up as a synonym of intrigue
