Took his likeness

"...(he) perfectly remembers being waited on last January twelve-month by two gentlemen, one of whom held him in conversation while the other took his likeness..."

In the sentence, what is meant by "took his likeness"? Does it mean,

a) the second gentleman looked like the man who perfectly remembers? or
b) the second gentleman copied/emulated the manners of the man who perfectly remembers?

Dear Selvakumar This is Nicholas Nickelby, 1838 - 39, (Charles Dickens) I think your answer must come in two parts - what does the phrase mean? And what did the second gentleman actually do? The phrase means that the second gentleman took a picture of the subject of the sentence However, I'm pretty sure the book is too early for photography so my best guess is that the second gentleman takes out a drawing-pad and pencil and makes a sketch of the other person I hope we will get further details from other contributors..
