Took a celeb toll

The escalating tension took a celeb toll. And SRK crumbled under the stress of the Sena communal ire, breaking down at a Press conference.

Could you please explain to me what "took a celeb toll" means here?

Though I know "celeb" is a short form of "celebrity"

I looked at the slide show you linked and came away without a clue what they are talking about.

Thank you RayH.

I'm briefing you here. SRK was criticized and threatened not to screen his films in theatres by the extremist party Shiv Sena for his(SRK) some provoking remarks.
Now SRK is regretting for his remarks as he now feels it may harm the other co-actors who are also a part of the film and whose lives depending on it.

I hope now you can help me with this.

To "take a toll" means to have a damaging effect. Presumably "took a celeb toll" means "had a damaging effect on celebrities". This casual use of the word "celeb" seems rather flippant given, if I'm understanding it correctly, the fairly serious nature of the story.
