Too much weight

1) She lost too much weight to become a model.
2) She lost too much weight in order to become a model.

I see two possible meanings:

a) She lost so much weight that she could not become a model.
b) In order to become a model, she lost too much weight. (probably she lost too much weight for her own good)

I think '1' is ambiguous, but '2' can only mean 'b'.

Gratefully,
Navi.

I would certainly read 1 as a, 2 as b. However, you are quite right - it's fair to read 1 as b too! It is an ambiguous statement.
