Too informed to be erudite???

Hi guys,

I saw this sentence and couldn't figure out what "too informed to be erudite" means.

A naval historian and a reporter of parts, he knows about seas, ships, seafarers and sea fighting in a fashion too informed to be erudite.

Thanks!!!

It's an odd epression, but I think it means that he has a lot of practical experience. To use other common idioms: He is not speaking from an ivory tower, but from the school of hard knocks.
