Which is correct: This mountain is too high to climb to the top of. This mountain is too high to climb to the top of it.

You have two choices, I believe.

1) This mountain is too high to climb to the top.

2) This mountain is too high to climb to the top of it.

I prefer (1) as it is shorter. (2) is acceptable.

This mountain is too high to climb to the top of.

This seems to me to be missing the "top of" what? This mountain is too high to climb to the top of the 3rd peak?

Perhaps Miriam can provide a better explanation.

Also, why not simply "This mountain is too high to climb"?

That's a good solution too, though you may just want to climb partially up the mountain. I often do that. I am not a daredevil and don't do technical (ropes, pick axes, and stuff) climbs. All my climbs are usually completed within one day. In one day, you can still ascend several hundred metres, even more than a thousand metres. By the end of the day, you've accomplished a lot.

When you are choosing a mountain to climb, you have to consider several factors, some of which are as follows: 1) your physical fitness, 2) height of the mountain, 3) difficulty of the mountain 4) climate, 5) your resources (water, tent, food, pick axe etc.), 6) time and so on.

So with your constraints some mountains are simply too high to climb to the top. But you can climb to those same mountains to a certain point or choose different mountains.
