Tone Question

"The Puritans were not uninterested in material prosperity and were prone when it came, unfortunately, to take it as a sign of God’s approval. Yet their fundamental criterion of success was not material wealth but the creation of a community in which a genuinely ethical and spiritual life could be lived."

I am not getting the author's opinion here. It seems to me the author is saying the Puritans care a lot about money which is unfortunate (the author used the word "unfortunately" indicating he/she thinks caring about money is not good). But then the author says the Puritans care about creation of community.
Can I infer that the Puritans generally maintained a balance between material and spiritual considerations?  Thanks for your explanation. Thanks....

sunflower2013 It seems to me the author is saying the Puritans care a lot about money I don't see that. He says that "they were not uninterested" in it. That means to me that they did care about material prosperity at least a little.
