In this context, a tone is the atmosphere or the "feel" of a description if you will, which can be open to interpretation or perception. If I said the tone of the summit between the Chinese leader and President Bush was described as pleasantly promising. I am inferring that the atmosphere had lead me to an interpretation that issues discussed during the summit had come to some sort of mutual agreement. That’s how I described the tone. But someone else may disagree or have a different description.

Tone described as Pretentious means fake, unsincere

Conventional ~ regular, routine, uneventful etc.
