Tomatoes

When you have blight or mildew on tomatoes or cucumbers, is it better to say:

Our tomatoes got blight/mildew. or We got blight/mildew on our tomatoes. ?

And does the same go for situations when the crops get weevils or aphids? If you found weevils on your lettuces, would you say: The lettuce plants got weevils. ?

Thank you!
