Tom had helped me vs Tom helped me.

Dear all,

I saw the following sentence in a grammar book. I think it is a third conditional sentence, and therefore should be corrected as "Fortunately, Tom 'had' helped me; otherwise, I'd have had to sell my car". I'd like to get your opinion on this.

"Fortunately, Tom helped me; otherwise, I'd have had to sell my car".
