toll plaza

"To reach the southeast parking lot (on the east side of the bridge at its southern end) when travelling southbound from Marin County to the City of San Francisco: cross the bridge, take the rightmost toll lane, pay the toll and make an immediate right turn leaving US101 just past the toll plaza. Make another immediate right turn onto the roadway which passes under the toll plaza."

toll - the money you have to pay to use a particular road, bridge etc (Longman)

What is toll plaza? Is it a proper name in San Francisco? Is it a place where people pay money to be able to pass the bridge?

Thanks,

Yes, it is a widening in the highway for multiple gates, where vehicles must stop to pay a road toll. Sometimes it includes a rest area / parking / fast food / restrooms.

Hi MrM,

Is 'toll plaza' a proper name in S.F. or it can be used in any place?

Thanks for the reply.

I presume most everywhere in the US at least, MTL-- I have not spent much time in Frisco.

"Toll plaza" is a common noun.

We in Houston have a toll plaza every 10 miles or so on the Beltway 8. The largest toll plaza consists of 3 EZ tag (electronically controlled) lanes, 3 coin-operated gates, and 2 manned booths. It sure looks like a plaza.
