TOEIC: to reach/ reaching

Due to the traffic jam, I was one hour late _____ my destination.
(A) reach
(B) reaching
(C) to reach
(D) by reaching

The correct answer to this question is C. I wonder if (C) is good too. Please help.

It confuses non-native speakers like me half the time. In grammar, infinitive and gerund play the same role. By the way, what is stumbly? I can't find this word in the dictionary.

Haha, sorry, I think I just invented that word. ;D I made an adjective out of stumble. Emotion: wink Sorry.

I would say so. The mention of the traffic jam does suggest a more on-going and continuing frustration in trying to reach the destination, however, so (B) is probably better even if (C) isn't totally wrong.
