TOEIC/ strengthen

During this fiscal year, the Twin Head Co. was ________ and its production rose from 700 cars a month to 1000 cars a month.

(A) widened
(B) strengthened
(C) amplified
(D) enlarged

I chose (C), but the answer key says it's (B). To me, these four answers are all similar in and confusing in meaning. Can anyone help? Thanks.

A company cannot really be "amplified" or "widened". While (B) is not impossible, I would choose (D). I don't understand why the answer key says (B).

I vote for expanded. Perhaps the answer is common in BrE?
