TOEIC Question
___________ a country's food becomes rich, the disease of poverty (malnutrition, infectious disease) are replaced by the those of civilization (arteriosclerosis, obesity.)

(C) Even though
(D) Unless
The answer key says that (A) is the correct answer, but I think (B) is better. I checked the dictionary and found whereas has more than one meaning, such as "but" and "compared with the fact that". I also found that as also has different meanings, like "while", "because", "although", and "like". Can anyone please advise on this?
