TOEFL texbook

I've encountered with the following in a TOEFL textbook:
Older patients, on the other hand, are often too weak for such supplementary treatments and can make do with replacement valves that are less durable.
What does can make do with mean here?
Thanks.

Could you please explain whether it is a collocation can make do with and if possible give another example with it?
Thanks in advance.

'Make do' is the collocation, though 'with' is a frequent preposition. You can find some examples on FrazeIt: http://fraze.it/n_search.jsp?q=make+do&l=0
