TOEFL Independent Task: Are people never satisfied?

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. Use specific reasons to support your answer.

It is difficult to understand us, the human. We are a high-level species that has incredible complex behavior and thought. Discussing human, there is a well-known saying that people are never satisfied with what they have, and they always want something more or different. While there is controversy about this statement, I entirely agree with this view.

First, always wanting something motivates people to work and learn. People do things so they can achieve a goal, which often originates from their desires. For example, we study because we want to expand our knowledge, feeling that what we already knew is not enough. The farmers spend time on their crops because they want an abundant harvest so they will have more money for their family. Being not satisfied acts as a cause for everyone to put effort on their work, and everyone doing their job is what set the natural order of the world as it is today. Thus, all pros and cons set aside, it is necessary for the world that people are never satisfied and always have desires.

Second, wanting new things makes the society moving forward. Through the human history, people have created numerous things that make the world a better place to live. Human lifespan has increased, and people have access to many facilities that would make their life much more convenient compared to the past. In fact, those creations and developments are all direct results of the seek for more and new knowledge. Without the wish for something more and something novel that leads human to come up with inventions, we wouldn't have all the things, from shelters to medicines, that we have today.

In conclusion, people always have desires and never satisfied because that's how they are motivated to work and learn. Moreover, the wish for something new makes our world develop and become a better place.
