Hello,
Please, check my essay...my exam is very soon and I certainly need to improve my writing skills in order to receive the desired score. Would you correct my grammar mistakes and tell me what score I would receive?
TOPIC: In some classes, course grades are based on exams, while in other classes, grades are based more on class participation than on exam. Which type of grading do you prefer? Use specific reasons to support your response.
In some classes, course grades are based just on exams, while in other classes, grades are based more on class participation that on exams. I definitely prefer classes in which the grades are based on participation and involvement in the study process. Attending classes has a lot of benefits for students and it is much easier for them to understand the material that studying on their own just before the exam.
Firs, by participating in classes, the student are much more engaged with the study process. They are responsible for submitting their papers and reports, and meeting the deadlines. Therefore, they tend to study more regularly and not count on last minute preparation for the exam. To illustrate, for my economics class last term, I had to write three different reports under topics that were included in the exam list of topics. It helped me to learn them during the semester and I did not have to do it while preparing for the final exam. Therefore, it was much easier for me to study for the final exam, as I had less material to cover.
The second main benefit that class participation gives us is that students do not have to study on their own for the exam. Studying hours and hours in the library on our own normally does not have same effects as participating in classes and discussing cases with other students. For example, when I took my sociology class last year, I had to work to pay my tuition fee, and did not manage to participate in the classes. Therefore, I had to prepare for the exam on my own, studying in the library every single night. It was really tough for me and it happened that I failed the exam simply because I did not have who to discuss with and there was nobody to tell me what I should focus on.
And finally, while visiting classes, students can always ask the teacher for additional information or for personal opinion that they cannot find in the textbook. Our teachers are experienced and they can always tell us what the most common mistake made by students are and how to avoid them. For example, while preparing for my TOEFL test, I attended classes with an American teacher, Brent, who has been living in my country for 10 years while teaching Bulgarian student. Therefore, he was able to tell me what the typical mistakes made by Bulgarians are, according to his experience, and how to avoid them. Without having him as a teacher, I would never be able to know that information as it is not written in any textbook or guide.
As seen above, attending classes is definitely beneficial for all the students, therefore stimulating them would be very positive for their performance and final grade. Perhaps more universities should think about changing the way they grade their students and try to stimulate them to participate and get more involved in the study process.
Thank you!
Best,
Nadya
