Today as Adverb? & Position in Sentence

Hello,

I am studying on my own to improve my grammar skills, and would like to check my understanding of a sentence.

"American society today is a world of conflict, challenge, struggle, and potential."

I believe in this sentence "today" is an adverb since it answers the question "When?". From my grammar textbook, it looks like this sentence should be rewritten:

"Today American society is..." as my textbook gives examples with adverbs modifying adjectives as coming only before the adjective.

Is my interpretation correct? Does the original sentence need to be written or is it OK as it stands?

Thank you for your time.

There is no need to rewrite the sentence. It is fine as the placement of adverbs is so flexible.

today is an adverb modifying society. American society today paraphrases as "American society as it exists today" (as opposed to "American society as it existed at some other time").
