Today

Giving today is January 20, 2005, and I want to mention an accident happened at the same date 20 years ago (That is: happened on January 20, 1985), can I express it as:

Today 20 years ago, an strange accident happened...?

I wonder "Today 20 years ago" works or not.

I've seen the structure "Twenty years today,...". This is about word order. Not sure about the use of "ago".

The "today" comes last.

"Twenty years ago today, ..."

CalifJim,

I've been thinking about this.
Do you think it should be like this:

It was twenty years ago today... (past simple)
AND
It's been twenty years today... (present perfect)?
