Tobacco strain

"Pipe-weed is a Tobacco strain grown and enjoyed much by the hobbits of the Shire, which was first introduced there by Tobold Hornblower."

I know what is pipe-weed, but I can't understand why the word strain can be used to describe the baccy if I get the hang of the phrase"Tobacco strain".
