To write or to write with?

Hi. Please help. Let's say we're going to write a crude definition of the word "pencil". I think we can say it is a thing and it is used by people to write. Could we write these as definitions? Do we need the word "with" after "write"?

2. It is a thing used by people for writing (with?).
