To write and speak english effectively

Question

Hi, I'm from Orissa, India,

I have a very weakness to learn how to write and speak good english. I tried many techniques but my problem is I'm always unmindful while reading or listening because I always concentratge and hunt for word. so that i forget the real context. Can you please help me how can I do? Is reading and listening is the only way to use english effectively. am i in the right direction? Please help me.

Hi Narayan,
I am not a native english speaker, but I can tell you how I have tried to improve my english over the past few years.
While reading, make a short note of the word that you did not understand. If that particular word is important to the the context of what you are reading, then you can immediately search for the meaning of that word, and then continue reading after you completely understand it. Sometimes, not knowing the meaning of a word will still allow you to grasp the gist of a paragraph or a section of the paragraph you are reading. If you think that is the case, you can know the meaning of the word after you finish reading. This prevents you from constantly going back to your dictionary, which can hinder the flow of your reading ( also, it may not be highly effective in improving your reading comprehension).
While listening to native speakers is important in learning a new language, constant reading and writing can also aid in quickly learning the language. One source that I have always found helpful was reading newspaper articles. If you have access to decent internet connection, there are many newspapers that you can access online. You can improve your writing skills by initially practicing on short paragraphs (on any topic that is you are interested in writing), and knowing the mistakes that you are committing.

Hello Tyro,

Just like Narayan, me too has a difficulty in speaking English, I have no problem in understanding it but i have a great problem in speaking english.

When I start to talk it seems like that my brain shrinks, I am struggling to find a word or group of words to say, plus I have this hard accent that added my problem to speak English.

I feel frustrated everyday, especially I am living here in the US, where everbody speaks English.

I wonder if you could help me on this matter. Thank you so much.

Hi,

Speaking from personal experience, achieving proficiency in written and spoken English take countless hours of dedicated time in our lives in practicing and refining, perhaps even years. Even that, we have to pay very close attention to the basics which are often neglected. i.e. spelling, capitalization, and basic grammar rules etc. There is no quick remedy or magic wand to help us improve our English except to keep on with writing, listening, and practicing speaking as much as you have time for.
