To what extent?!

Hi
May I replace 'how completely' with 'to what extent' and 'manage' witth 'be successful' in:
"Diagram 110 shows how completely White has managed to surround the Black King."
i.e.:
"Diagram 110 shows to what extent White has been successful in surrounding the Black King."

Note that the original is ambiguous. It could mean 'to what extent'. It could also mean ' the complete extent of the manner in which'. The latter seems more likely to me, though it's impossible to say without seeing the diagram.
