To + verb-ing

I have a question that has been bothering me for a while. Can you please explain to me in these sentences below I've found during my various reading time, what are the usage of "to verb + ing" mean and why and when should we use that form:

1. What's the best approach to keeping the peace?
2. At about 8 months, your baby will probably start trying to pull up to standing while holding onto furniture.
3. it would probably be similar to having a tornado run over a big open space.

Many thanks!
