To use to know someone

Hi,
I am very surprised by a sentence heard in one song. How can you say that "you used to know a person" ? You cannot stop "knowing a person". Is this a special way to say or what? I assume that when you say something like that you mean that you do not see this person anymore (but, you still know him!).

Can you clarify it?

Thanks

Pamela

Maybe the person has changed. You have changed so much since I last saw you, that I don't know (recognize) you anymore.

Aha..I did not think about it!! Maybe it´s like you say. It seems to be a good explanation!

Thank you!!

I guess you mean the song 'Somebody that I used to know'. It's like Alphecca said, they were together in a relationship, and she has changed herself a lot- So he doesn't recognize her anymore because what she has done doesn't fit to the person he used to know.
