To use IS or ARE

This is the sentence:

The simplicity, yet the gravity in his words is / are mind boggling...
I think it should be is because gravity is singular. However, since words is plural, it can also be are.

Please suggest.

I believe it is "IS." This is because it refers to gravity, NOT words.

I'm not a native English speaker, so I could be wrong.

It must be is, because the subject of your sentence is gravity.

The verb must be in harmony with the subject.
