To use depending, do you need a choice?

Is this possible or do you need 2 choices? A few years is only one choice. How should #1 be altered?

1 Depending on how much the phone I just bought cost, I keep it a few years.

What do you think about #2?

2 The number of years I keep my mobile phone depends on how much it cost.

Thank you
