Vocabulary

to uphold something

Hello,
I have noticed that uphold is often used in collocation with statement/principle/etc. Is it correct to say "The UN has upheld efforts to return the refugees peacefully"? It sounds a little odd to me, but "uphold" means "to maintain, support, defend". How do you normally use it?

Yesterday I came across: "You can't go out today because of your homework. Feel free to ask your mother her opinion, but I am sure she'll uphold what I just said." Is this one odd too? Is uphold used in everyday speech and how would you use it?

I can't recall the last time I used this verb in everyday circumstances.

I might say something like this:
The local constable upholds the law in our neighborhood.
