To understand a video properly

While I was watching the following video, I couldn't understand the word that he says after "but they were". In fact, there is not any subtitles for that video as well. Despite a number of attempts to get what he says, I couldn't hear it properly. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know what he says after "but they were", in the following video.
