To understand a sentence

In one of books that I've read recently, I had to select one sentence which has the similar meaning to the given sentence from five sentences.


This is the question sentences.

Plenty of students continue to be drawn to the intellectual thrill of linguistics field work.


Following sentence is their answer.

Many young researchers are interested in doing practical research, in spite of the prevalence of theoretical linguists.


Though I can understand the second sentence without difficulty, I cannot understand the structure and the meaning of the first sentence. Therefore, I would really appreciate it, if someone could paraphrase the first sentence, especially the bold part which is the most confusing part for me.
