To turn outward??

Hello everyone!, I'd like someone to help me with this word: "to turn outward".

Lastborns, Sulloway observes. are usually more social, more agreedable, and more open to new and even revolucionary ideas. This is because, sensing the power of the already established relationship between the oldest sibling and the parent, they have to turn outward to entablish their place in the world.

They have to look outside of the family unit , it appears. They won't find "where they belong" within the family, so they must look elsewhere. Thank you for giving us the context.
