To turn an airplane dark

Hello,

Does this sentence "Just before take-off the pilots turned the plane dark" sound okay? All I know is that they tend to dim the lights inside the plane from time to time (and sometimes before take-off). I don't know much about aviation, but this sentence sounds a little unusual to me. Dim is not exactly dark, but I don't know much about aviation, so it might be okay. What do you normally say?

Thank you.

It sounds a bit weird to me. You can say "the pilot(s) dimmed / turned off the cockpit lights".
