to try to learn

The aim of the present experiment is to study the angular distributions---mainly for a, b, and c,---and to try to learn more about their cluster structure.

1) Are m-dashes used correctly here?
2) In formal writing, would it be better to say "the experiment is aimed at studing"?
3) Do I need to say "the present experiment" or "present" can be omitted?
4) Could anyone please help me paraphrazing "to try to learn more". I think there should be a more formal-writing-phrase in this context. Maybe "make an effort to learn"?

Thank you!

Thanks a lot!

Would commas surrounding "a, b, and c" be more formal than the m-dashes? What would you use?

Please advise me on how to construct this sentence (it sounds clumsy to me): The value for the radius, x ,was smaller whereas for the diffuseness, y, it was larger compared to those presented in the article.

Too many commas, among other things:

The value for the radius x was smaller and that for the diffuseness y was larger than those presented in the article.

What word is better here, "differences" or "discrepancies"? And "arise" or "due to"?

The observed discrepancies in the factors could arise from the application of another/a different version of the DWBA code.

Would it be better to say:
The application of a different DWBA code could results in the observed discrepancies.

Thank you!

A discrepancy is a mistake.
