To try one's wings???

Sorry if it is under a wrong topic but I didn't see any better ones for this question: Is there such a expression as To Try One's Wings, I know that it is used but I need to know if it officially exists- I didn'd see it in any online dictionarys and other that kind of places and my English teatcher made it my special task to find out if it is allowed (not an americanism or slang).

Thank you for any assistance that you can provide

Mark, 18-year-old student from Estonia (form 12).

I am truly distressed to hear that your teacher considers "Americanisms" not to be "allowed", by which I assume he/she means "incorrect".

Thank you all, the problem is we are learning English english and thus we try not to learn americanisms as a part of our course, wierd I know but it does help to keep the traditional english alive.

You all have been most helful, thank you again
