To try a love affair

Hi,
I don´t have idea of how to express this:

A girl is going out with a man and, this man wants to start a love affair with her but the girl is not sure if she wants, so could she say: "I have tried to have with him a love affair but it didn´t work"

I mean that she just tried but in the end, she decided not to go on with him.

How can this be expressed in english?

Thanks

Pamela

She decided that she wanted to be a friend, not a lover.

Hi,
thank you for replying but I think I wasn´t able to ask my question clearely. :-(

I need a verb explaining that this girl is only "trying" how can say in different words? Meaning that she is giving a chance to this affair but it is just a try.She isn´t involved yet she is only thinking about being with him.

In Czech and Italian we can use a verb which corresponds in engli

Pamela81could she say: "I have tried to have with him a love affair but it didn´t work"
I don't think there is "one" single work that could express what you tried to say. She could say: I'd like to start by getting to know each other first and let's not rush into things.
