Vocabulary

to treat someone with too much fear

Hi teachers,

To treat someone with too much respect, means that you have respect for them.

To treat someone with too much fear, does that mean you fear them, or someone fears you?

Thanks

Hello fivejedijon,

I found this, (grovel) from merriam learner dictionary
to treat someone with too much respect or fear in a way that shows weakness in order to be forgiven or to gain approval or favor
? He had to grovel to get her to accept his apology. ? He made a groveling apology to his girlfriend.

Do you mean merriam learner's dictionary is wrong sometimes maybe?

I haven't yet found a dictionary that is fault-free.

However, I did not say that it was wrong. I said that this did not sound natural to me. COCA has dozens of citations for 'treat ... with respect'; it has none for 'treat ... with fear'.
