Grammar

To treat someone different/differently

Hi

Two questions:

Which one is right?

She treated her own children different.

OR

She treated her own children differently.

And is it possible to say: "She was to never open her eyes again"

Thanks a lot!

Anonymous She treated her own children different. OR She treated her own children differently. Both are used but only the second one is right as an adverb is definitely needed here.

  • Anonymous She treated her own children different.
  • OR She treated her own children differently.
  • Both are used but only the second one is right as an adverb is definitely needed here.
  • Anonymous "She was to never open her eyes again" I have no idea how common or natural this is but I see nothing wrong with it.
  • However, many people will disagree since there has been disagreement concerning the split infinitive for at least 400 years.

Actually, the excact sentence is:

"However, her own children, Ida and Elsie, she would treat quite different/differently".

Is it still differently?

There is no debate. People, who knows why, keep claiming there is one. Authoritative sources from a hundred years ago were already trying to squelch the pseudo-rule. See Steven Pinker's http://www.amazon.com/The-Sense-Style-Thinking-Persons/dp/0670025852 for a great recent treatment.

My answer to your first question: the second is right.

My answer to your second question: only if she's dead.
