To the severity?

Hye everyone! Could you please help me by telling ,what does"as to the severity" mean here?
" The GDP figure could provide significant insight as to the severity of America's economic hardship."
I have read in contexts ,according to the severity,due to the severity, etc. but what does it mean here after "as."
And also please tell me its meaning in the below sentence.
" Furthermore, the age of the animals at the time of exposure is critical to the severity of the effects"
