He studied very hard to the point of having running nose.
He worked very hard to the point of bending his back backward.

Does "to the point of" mean that "until something happens"?

It can, but not necessarily.

He worked to the point of exhaustion.

I suppose a person might think of exhaustion as "something happening", but it's not really an event.
