Vocabulary

to talk past each other

Could you please tell me what "spoken past each other" means? This is the sentence I have to translate into French:

"... educators and advocates of inclusion have either spoken past each other, or have not communicated or articulated their arguments."

Thank you.

From the context, I would say the author means that people have not listened to what others say.

I think it's when people are talking about two (or multiple!) topics when they think that they're talking about one.

e.g. (really bad example):

Person 1: Beers are cold
Person 2: No, Bears are warm!
Person 1: No, in America, beers are cold!
....
Person 2: But they're mammals!
At this point, they will no longer be talking past each other.
