To take place

Hi!

I was wondering whether the expression "take place" has a general "occur" meaning, in time and space, or it only refers to the last one...

For example, can I say: "the finding took place during the papacy of ... "?

Or should I use it just in sentences like "the Jubelee took place in Rome"?

Thank you very much for your help!!
