Hi,

I'm not a lawyer. In a legal sense, here's how I understand the idea.

subpoena - requires a person to come to court, usually to testify. eg You might be a witness to a crime.

summons - requires a person to come to court, always (or usually?) because they have been charged with a minor crime

Summon is usually slightly less formal, unless issued by a court such as with a summons which again could be under penalty, but not necessarily
