Vocabulary

to squash/scotch an idea

Hello,
Do you think both of them would work in: "The boss squashed my idea immediately"? I have been thinking of using "quash". Would there be any significant difference between quash and squash?

Thank you

With beliefs or ideas that require support in order to succeed, the word squash conjures up an image of something being destroyed by crushing it. Scotch, as a verb, is not commonly used in my experience, although appears to mean the same. However, quash is more of a legal term for stopping a process in court by an appeal or argument.

  • I would go with squash for best recognition and understanding.

I have been thinking of "reject". For some reason I think it would fit the context as it is considered rude to "reject" someone's idea.

Yes, to reject is the opposite of accept. When offered a raise in salary, employees acting as a group may 'reject' the offer as inadequate/insufficient. Proposed changes can be rejected as unsuitable by a client or manager. It could replace 'squash' and be much more understood by a reader.

I can think of a few more synonyms, but I am afraid that they might sound fine to a few people and horrible to a few million people.
