Vocabulary

to slow right down

I don't know how to translate the sentence:
The car rounds a bend and he slows right down.
What does 'right down' mean? Is it something like' right now', or maybe it means that he stopped on the right side of the road?
Could you help please?

"right" is an informal adverb which adds a friendly meaning of "quickly, obediently, responsively"

A: May we come for a visit?
B: Sure, come right over!

A: we have to leave now. I'm waiting at the door.
B: I'll be right there.

The implication here is that the driver of the car had some reason to suddenly slow down in this unusual, even suspicious, manner. For example, he might be looking for someone who was supposed to meet him at that spot, or he might have spotted something on the side of the road that sparked his interest, or he might want force someone in the car to get out, etc.

To me, "slow right down" means this. I don't really agree with some of the other replies. Perhaps there are regional differences.
