"to sit for a public position?"

When I have to take a test to get a job as a government employee (not in politics), to get a position in a public service, how can I refer to this kind of selection?

Hi, In British English, you can say sit for an exam. ie apply to take it. and take it You might say eg I have to sit for / take a public service exam .

In British English, you can say sit for an exam.
ie apply to take it. and take it

You might say
eg I have to sit for / take a public service exam.
